I tried to add the cross and flame to the logo but don't know if I like the looks of it. I like the IDEA of it - to incorporate our Methodist heritage and associate ourselves with our denomination. Just not sure I love the look of it.

It's time for new logos at church again! My idea going into this is that we want to (finally) get a logo that will be generic enough to stand the test of time. I don't want the logos to go with the current curriculum or the current staff - and I'd like them to coordinate.

I'm not sure which of the youth logos I like better - they're pretty similar so I'm not sure it matters to anyone but me.

My favorite part about these is how they look when folded. I'll have to take a photo of them after we get them printed on the right paper. My other favorite part is the cityscapes...those are actually the skylines of Prague, Vienna, and Münich! And they match the artwork on the choir's t-shirts and posters, etc. I love matching graphics.

Finally got back to designing websites! Had fun doing a small 3-page site for CollaborationSource. They wanted a clean site with no frills - and although it is very clean, I don't think it looks too simple. Just right. Also revamped their logo.

This was my first time doing a contact form and it works perfectly, which makes me very happy!

Fix-It Friday

www.iheartfaces.com has a weekly Fix-It challenge that I thought would be fun to try. So I downloaded their original photo:

And then I used Photoshop CS3 to 'fix' it. I cropped it (hopefully that isn't against the rules!) and fixed the blurry flakes on the girls face. Then I changed the curves a little to lighten the shadows and lighten around her face. Then I fooled with the colors a bit to make them 'pop' and lastly I changed the colors of her scarf so everything was more in the blue-family. Here's my final result:

I got a new Nikon d90 camera and so I have been doing the Project 365 where you post a photo per day for a year. For the month of March, I have been using the photography 'assignments' from The Daily Shoot. My favorite so far is the product photo we did on March 24, so I thought I'd post it here. I have no affiliation with the iRobot or Roomba company - I just love my Roomba's!

Jane Goodall Lecture Adverts

Well, I don't get to do much design work anymore but I did volunteer to do the posters and tickets for an upcoming lecture at the college. It hasn't been approved yet by the Jane Goodall people, but here's what I got. (and yes - the lecture is coming right up, isn't it? She had a last-minute cancellation and so that's why there isn't much time to advertise this.)

Ok - worked on it some more and I like these better. Almost the same but a little better I think. I think I'd be happy with any of them (although the one with the tree coming out of the K I'm not so sure about).

I really like the one with the Fall leaf but am afraid it might look a little too gloomy.

Now - which one?

I am under the gun for this one....logos take forEVER but they want it...of course...now. Ha!

My idea is that I don't want just a rock for the logo - too obvious. The other thing is that the program is expanding...Solid Rock used to be just the youth group but now they're going to include the children. So I wanted something to show growth - thus the leaves.

Anything good here? Any other ideas?

Well, I'm back to teaching math full-time this Fall! I will still be doing some graphic design, but it will probably slow down.

This site won't actually be 'live' for awhile because the owner is going to do his own pages. He has 1800 pages, but I just did 3 for him (one of each kind) and he'll do the coding from there. He is very knowledgeable in html and will do a great job, but I just don't have the time to do it all before I start work in August. (teaching math!)

I was happy to get the chance to do an illustrative website - I've always wanted to.

First Corinthians sermon graphics

I was given the photo in the background and the title "I Corinthians" and really no other direction. I don't know which direction they're going with the sermons so I just went with the Western theme the the photo evoked.

Our church is starting a new tradition where the different worship services come together for a combined service whenever there's a month with 5 Sundays. So I'm trying to think of a clever catch phrase or name and logo for this new cooperative service.

Below is my first few thoughts and above is my final. (as of now!)

This is a tutorial from PSDtuts that I've been wanting to try. With the church picnic advert, I finally had the opportunity. Its a great technique but VERY labor intensive.

New Text Treatments

I've been working on learning new photoshop techniques for text treatments. (using online tutorials.)

This one is really cool but you need to click on it to see the detail in the letters for Bake Sale.

This is supposed to look like spray paint. Kinda works.

This is the first time I've made my own brush in photoshop with the pen tool. Nice skill to know.

This is a lot of cloud rendering and layer blending modes. I didn't start out to make a spooky scene, but it sure turned out that way.

The wisps are supposed to look like smoke but I think it looks more like it's under water.

This last one I did without any tutorials - just techniques I'd learned from them.

I felt like some new colors and started to go light....greens and grays with whites. But then I liked this damask black background and well....it all go a little dark. Its pretty though! Don't know how long I'll keep it.What do you think? Do you like the colors? Any and all comments will be taken under advisement.

UPDATE: Ok, I changed the size of the buttons on the left and made a shape out of the header. I think this will be it for awhile.

I should be working on a website for a client or the Sunday video but I am procrastinating today, due to the cold weather. So I got out my Wacom tablet and am trying to learn how to use it. I know there's a better way but I can't find it yet! Here's a picture of my baby I did with it.

I followed a tutorial for this one and love the way it turned out! The best thing I learned here was how to make that text look like it is cut out - I made two layers. The bottom one is normal but the top one has the fill set to 0% and then an inner-shadow added. I had tried it before with just one layer with the inner-shadow and it never looked quite right.

This is my first draft for a brochure for the opening of our new church building, named the MAC (Methodist Activities Center). I wasn't given very much information or photos, so have used what I had. Also - I was given the color palette of purple and buff. I think it needs something - more spice or texture or something, but this is what I have so far.

looping background in After Effects

I am in need of seemlessly looping background video for church-use and so have learned how to use Adobe AfterEffects to create one for myself. I used the Fractal Noise preset and tweaked it until it worked. The original is 6 seconds long and it is looped about 5 times in the video here.

We'll be using this as a background to song lyrics in ProPresenter. Eventually I'd like to make some backgrounds tailored to the songs that we frequently use....have the title or something right on there.

GMEA programs - part 2

Due to $$ constraints, I have had to change the GMEA programs. Turns out the 8.5 x 22 inch paper costs a fortune. Who knew? So now they will be printed on 8.5 x 17 and then cut down so when folded, they are 8.5 inch squares. I'm happy with it - was a little disappointed we can't do the gate-fold, but this is nice.

We had three shoots on this one because the mic kept getting messed up but now we've got it down! The lighting was too bright this week - I'll have to tone that down next week. Also need to find a way to put a amber gel on her back to counteract the green light reflecting on her shoulders.

There is a little ambient sound this week as OASIS classes were being held when we shot and there are a lot of people running around. Also the heat kept coming on and blowing around!

Not bad though! My kids like the part with Richard on the walking track the best.

I really like the font in this one. I think the script makes it seem more casual and friendly but the font on "fitness club" makes that really stand out and look serious. Around town, most people refer to the place as just 'the fitness center' or just 'the fitness club' so I think its important that that part can really be read clearly.

The people in motion shows action (obviously) but the front person makes it seem like you've reached a goal to me. Also, the three overlapping people to me says 'community' but also action at the same time.

I have two jpgs here....one is to show a few different placement options and one to show color combinations.

I have been working on Christmas graphics for church but also a logo for the local fitness club in my 'spare' time. Here's some of what I have so far.

The trouble here has been that I have so many ideas, I can't quite focus yet. My most recent is the first one.

(the numbers don't mean anything - just makes it easier for you to refer to your favorite in the comments section! Also - we haven't decided on a color scheme yet so you can try to imagine different colors in these designs too. You'll have to click on the picture to be able to see them large enough.)

This time I'm trying a fixed-position background so there isn't a 'slice' to repeat. Its just one huge image that remains fixed. The text will scroll, but the image remains fixed. Not sure I like that effect as much as a moving background, but it does enable you to make nice images.

Wordpress page for Ken Soltys Ministries

Ken had wanted a section of his website that he could update himself. He travels with his ministry and would like a way to update people back home. So I installed Wordpress on his server and have started to customize the page to match the rest of his site.

So far the newest thing I've tried is the contact form to be added to his mailing list. I used a plug-in called CForms by Oliver Seidel and it is great. Very easy to use - easy to customize. I'm sure there are a lot of other forms plug-ins out there too.

I was so happy I learned to make blogger themes that I decided to try my hand at Wordpress. Its a LOT more complicated! The nice thing is you can host a Wordpress account on your own site.

So once I get this down, I can design sites for clients but have sections of the site done in wordpress where they can update their own information online anytime, anywhere.

I have just begun trying to learn this, but here is what I have so far....
I thought Wordpress was just like blogger - an online blogging site. But its so much more - its almost like software to blog. You CAN have a blog on their site, but you can also upload their software to your webhost and host the blog yourself. That gives you total control over the site, and lets you keep your own web address.

I've been wanting to learn how to do backgrounds for blogger and finally took the time to figure it out. Turns out - not too hard! I did both this site and my friend Joann's.

First you make a background 'slice':
And then you code blogger to use that slice as a background, repeating in the y-direction.

Mac - A as the building itself

Well, I've certainly put enough time into this thing, but it IS a $6 million building, so it's totally worth it! I got a final version (top left) and then did up a few variations that might be fun.
I like the 'light' spilling from the door. It makes me think of a cold winter night and driving up to the building to get my kids, or to play volleyball, or eat dinner with my church family....it will be the warm, inviting place to enter.

I thought it might help if you saw what this building looks like. I don't have a photo of it, although it is almost finished, but I did find the original renderings on my computer. The MAC is the part on the left.

I am starting to adjust the Kerning a little. Turns out its just tweaking the spacing between letters. Who knew?

Looked this up online, as I couldn't figure out if Kerning was a noun or verb. It said:

n. (in typography) technique of setting a pair of letters closer together than is usual by reducing the space between them, tracking.
